Apidura Backcountry Saddle Pack

Apidura’s backcountry saddle packs allow you to carry quite a bit of gear under the saddle without the need for a rear rack. They are particularly well suited to lightweight touring and touring on rough roads or single-track where panniers are often too bulky and are prone to rattling around.

These saddle bags come in 3 sizes – Compact, Medium and Regular.

  • Compact holds 11L and measures (in mm) 420d x 150h x 17w. Its seatpost strap is 40mm wide. Weight: 350g
  • Medium holds 14L and measures (in mm) 450d x 160h x 18w. Its two seatpost straps are 70mm wide. Weight: 360g
  • Regular is 17.5L and measures (in mm) 520d x 170h x 19w. Its two seatpost straps are 90mm wide. Weight: 400g

Typically, the Compact is the best bet for traditional geometry road bikes with little exposed seatpost, rear suspension bikes with big wheels, and particularly small frame sizes.

The bags mount using a three point system – around the seatpost, and on the back of both seat rails. Once mounted, compression straps tighten the bag into place and compress the contents of the bag.

All three bags feature a roll closure that may be rolled down to make the bag as short as 340mm. The roll closure and the materials are all waterproof, however the seams are not so in torrential rain we’d suggest a lightweight dry bag for delicate items or a seam sealant. In our experience your gear stays dry inside while riding and only gets damp if the bags are left out in the rain overnight.

One great feature of the Apidura bags is the light mount. It is a simple lash tab that allows you to mount any taillight with a belt clip. There are two on each bag to allow you to position it based upon how much the roll closure has been rolled up.

Included on the top of the bags is a bungee cord in a figure 8 arrangement that allows extra storage. We find this spot particularly good for a rain jacket which is often needed at a moments notice and then wet when taken off later.
