Save the date, we’ve planned the Melbourne edition of the international Swift Campout. If you’re interested in trying camping by bike this is the perfect opportunity to give it a shot. You can expect a 30km ride, mostly on bike paths, to a Parks Vic campsite with a campfire. All you need is a bike, a tent, camping gear and warm clothes.
The Swift Campout is organised by our friends at Swift Industries in the USA. Every year they put together an overnight camping trip for the Summer solstice and they encourage others around the world to do the same. They have been doing it for 3 years running and have people in 27 countries around the world taking part. Here in Australia it coincides with the Winter solstice meaning that our Campout will be a bit more challenging than theirs, but who doesn’t like huddling around a campfire in the depths of winter?
The ride is 30km each way on sealed roads and gravel paths and there are barely any hills. Much of it is on dedicated bike paths completely removed from cars, although there are a few short sections on main roads where we’ll need to be very mindful of the traffic. It should take us 2 to 2.5 hours with a couple of short breaks. Check out the route here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/22370796
The main group will leave from Commuter Cycles at 4pm, which will involve riding in the dark so a good set of lights is needed. For those who would like to spend the afternoon relaxing at the campsite, there is a group heading off from the workshop at midday too.
The reason for the 4pm departure is to allow for our annual Garage Sale. This is the one day a year that we discount old stock. Turn up early and you might grab a bargain.
The campsite, Longridge Park, is on the banks of the Yarra River in Warrandyte. There are toilet facilities, a wood fired BBQ, some tables and showers (for the lucky few who get some hot water!). It is run by Parks Victoria so the cost is a reasonable $10 per person. The ride is completely ‘self-supported’ meaning that you will need to supply your own tent, sleeping and cooking equipment. You’ll need to bring all your own food and water too.
Please RSVP to email@example.com and drop past the workshop to pay the camp fee to secure your spot. Spaces are limited so get in quick to guarantee yourself a spot.
- A roadworthy bike capable of 30km on gravel, carrying camping gear.
