The Workshop

Servicing bikes is at the centre of everything we do, so rather than have the workshop (and mechanics) hidden away, we’ve put them on a pedestal out the front.

In short, the workshop is the shop.

The idea of building the workshop around everyday cyclists goes much deeper: Commuter Cycles is conveniently located next to a bike path, we open early and close late, and we have courtesy bikes to keep you on the road.

Commuter Cycles is the product of one commuter’s frustration at the way most bikeshops focus on recreational cyclists, and treat servicing bikes (and customer service itself) as secondary to selling bikes.

We think Melbourne’s growing bike community deserves a bikeshop with a difference; a workshop that understands that servicing bikes is as much about providing customer service as it is about working on bikes.

Ultimately, Commuter Cycles is run for, and by, everyday cyclists.

We believe in bikes as a sustainable form of transport so our workshop is green too! This means we use green energy and bio-degradable solvents (as little as possible) and recycle as much as we can.

‘So who’s behind this operation?’ Well, at the moment ‘we’ actually means ‘me’. Commuter Cycles is currently run by its founder: Huw Vellacott. I am a bike nut/mechanic who gets from A to B on a singlespeed ‘Postie Bike’ (with a big basket on the front for my dog) and rides a ‘whizz bang’ dual suspension cross country Mountain Bike at endurance races on the weekends. When I’m not doing bike stuff, you’ll probably find me in the shed restoring my 1969 Fiat 500 (Bambino).

If this all sounds up your alley, check out our services and range of functional accessories and durable replacement parts.

Better still, drop in to the workshop, give us a call on 9388 1319 or email.
