The Soma Double Cross Disc comes off the shelf with 700c wheels and clearance for 40mm tyres without fenders. Helen’s partner Shaun wanted to explore the option of a 650b conversion. By using the smaller 650b wheel size, the frame comfortably allows for 42mm tyres with fenders. We built Helen some tough silver wheels and fit the super smooth and fast Compass Babyshoe Pass tyres. Change of wheel size also results in lowering the bottom bracket slightly which increases cornering stability with the trade off of a small reduction in ground clearance.
2 x 11 speed shifting & powerful disc brakes
Helen enjoys the ergonomics and performance of her roadie and didn’t want to compromise on the setup of her daily commuter. Shimano 105 5800 2×11 speed drive train delivers crisp, reliable shifting and comfortable STI levers. For stopping duties, we fit TRP Spyre brakes. These brakes are a great design, offering fantastic power and reliability, an excellent addition for all-weather riding.
We love full coverage fenders. We could go on forever about this. These hammered Honjos came up a treat. The long front fender protects the B&M Lumotec IQ Cyo light from front tyre spray and is neatly bolted to the Nitto M18 rack to provide extra support. We wired the lights and dynamo through the fenders to keep the bike uncluttered and to protect the wires. DiPell leather bar tape and a Brooks saddle provide long lasting comfort for the touch points. Helen has since bought herself a small canvas and leather Gilles Berthoud handlebar bag to mount on the Nitto rack.
We hope that Helen gets at least as much enjoyment from riding it as we did from looking at it in the workstand.
