Vittoria
Vittoria make two of our most popular tyres:
Randonneurs – a long-life, puncture resistant tyre that still rolls pretty nicely.
Rubinos – a lighter-weight, racier tyre, but with good puncture protection and good longevity.
Schwalbe
Schwalbe make our most durable tyres – Marathons. There are a number of different marathon models, all with a different balance of weight, rolling resistance, puncture protection and durability. The plain Marathon is a very popular tyre for us, and should provide good puncture protection for a very long time.
Continental
Continental make one of our most popular tyres for road bikes, the Gatorskin, which rolls nicely and has fantastic puncture protection.
Grand Bois.
Grand Bois are a small Japanese company who make very nice, very supple tyres in 700c and 650b. We try to keep their whole range in stock, and as far as we know we’re the only people in Australia who stock them. We’re always happy to post these interstate.
Marathon vs Randonneur
We’re often asked which is better out of the Marathon and the Randonneur. They are similar tyres, aimed at doing similar jobs. Both are long-lasting, offer good puncture protection and roll fairly well. They both come in a range of sizes, between moderately narrow and quite wide. Both are good tyres. Some people are die-hard fans of one or the other. Our take is that there is room for both, since they prioritize different features. Of the two, the Schwalbe puts more emphasis on longevity and puncture protection and the Vittoria puts more emphasis on nice rolling and comfort. We end up recommending the Randonneur more often than the Marathon, because for most applications we feel it strikes a better balance. But if you hate punctures more than anything, the Marathon might be a better choice.
